Our Learn to Skate program teaches the fundamentals of skating in a positive and encouraging environment. The skills learned throughout the program will provide skaters with the basic skills and techniques to continue into Hockey, Ringette, or Skating for Recreation. We pride ourselves on experienced, quality instructors and provide a low skater to instructor ratio. Our Learn to Skate classes are for ages 3 and over (we do accept 2 year olds as long as they can follow instructions).
We offfer classes at 2 convenient locations in Langley:
Academy Rink: 9770 196A Street & Main Rink: 20740 Mufford Crescent
What level should I sign my child up for?
The following describes our prerequisites for each level:
Beginner: For skaters that have never been on the ice before and cannot stand up on the ice
Level 1: For skaters that have been on the ice before and can stand up unassisted, touch their knees and toes, turn in a circle on the ice, and march forward
Level 2: For skaters that can skate forward with both feet, snowplow to stop, and balance on 1 leg
Level 3: For skaters that can cross step on line, skate forward and balance on 1 leg, forward snowplow to stop, backward march/walk, and jump
Level 4: For skaters that can skate the full length forward and glide backwards, can do lunges on both legs, jump and turn forwards and backwards, and 1 foot forward stop (right or left)
*Players could be moved if instructors find their skill level is better aligned with another group.
What gear does my child need?
CSA approved helmets (face mask highly recommended), skates, and warm knitted gloves are required. The instructors kindly request that skaters do not wear hockey gloves. The bulkiness makes it difficult to participate in certain activities such as picking up rings/toys off the ice, holding hula hoops, etc. *SKATE AND HELMET RENTALS ARE AVAILABLE AT OUR MAIN RINK FOR $3.00 EACH. WE HAVE VERY LIMITED RENTALS AVAILABLE AT THE ACADEMY RINK*
Properly fitting skates are very important, watch the video from Canadian Tire below for tips:
