High Performance Programs with Ryan Carignan

NHTC’s High Performance classes are led by Ryan Carignan, lead instructor and founder of Ryan Carignan Hockey Development (RCHD). Coach Ryan has designed these classes to help players reach their peak performance on the ice. He believes in creating a fun and supportive environment for the players while pushing them outside their comfort zone to improve their skills. Get ready to work hard, build confidence and reach your full potential on the ice.

NHTC offers the High Performance Programs seasonally in Winter, Spring, and Fall as well as Spring Break, Summer, and Holiday camps. See below for class descriptions.

High Performance Classes:

Power Skating

The Power Skating class is a high energy class with a focus on proper technique and repetitions. Skaters will get lots of reps and correction during the power skating class. During the skates Coach Ryan will be focusing on all aspects of skating including stride, balance, edges, crossovers, tight turns, backwards, explosive power, agility, pivots, and stick placement.

Hockey Skills

The Hockey Skills class is a high energy class with a focus on skating, puck control, and shooting. The class will include a variety of different skills with a focus on proper skating technique. This class is designed for hockey players that are confident in their skating ability. This class will use on ice manipulates (attack triangles) and shooting blockers. During the skates Coach Ryan will be focusing on skating, puck control, shooting, puck protection, passing, receiving a pass, deking, and compete drills.

3-on-3 Hockey

3-on-3 Hockey is for players who are confident in their skating and skills ability. Players are given the opportunity to play competitive and fun 3-on-3 hockey with other players of similar skill level. The games are high intensity with lots of battling. Players may be moved based on skill level to create balanced, competitive, and safe 3-on-3 games. Call 604-534-7825 to register as a GOALIE!

Battle & Compete

The Battle & Compete class is fast-paced, high-intensity, and filled with small-sided battle and compete drills. Players will learn different ways to battle and will implement them in game situation drills. Coach Ryan will focus on small area games, puck protection, play on the boards, engagement, and battle and compete skills. This class is for U13 and under; players are paired up based on size and skill level.

Rep Prep

This specialty Summer Camp is designed to prepare players for upcoming tryouts. Ryan will combine aspects of power skating, hockey skills, battles, offense, and shooting and scoring to get players in game shape and ready to compete. Arrive at tryouts feeling confident and at peak performance.

Body Checking

Another specialty camp, Coach Ryan prepares the U11/U13 age groups for contact hockey by teaching how to give and take hits safely and effectively. Learn how to play with contact, using your body to gain a competitive edge.

All-In-One

The All-In-One class will combine aspects of Power Skating, Hockey Skills, and Battle & Compete for a complete training class that will be fast-paced and high-intensity. Come ready to work hard while improving all aspects of your game.

Ryan Carignan is the lead instructor and founder of Ryan Carignan Hockey Development. He has over 10 years of coaching experience and has run the High Performance hockey programs at NHTC since 2017. He currently coaches the Vancouver Aces and Little Aces teams, as well as the 2014 HPL Fylers.

As an elementary school teacher, Ryan understands how to keep kids motivated and engaged, ensuring functional corrections and lots of reps. He believes in creating a fun and supportive environment for players while pushing them outside their comfort zone. In Coach Ryan’s classes, get ready to work hard, build confidence, and reach your full potential on the ice.

Ryan wrapped up his own playing career at Concordia University where he received numerous awards for both the team and the league. While playing for the Thunder, he earned degrees in both Psychology and Teaching. Ryan is now a Grade 5 teacher for the Surrey School District.
