Tips for Helping Your Child Become an Exceptional Hockey Player

At NHTC, we are all about unleashing the potential of children, youth and adults alike in the great Canadian sport of hockey. Although many people believe that skill is the key component to becoming a champion hockey play, there are additional traits that will take your child from good to great – which is why we want to share these ‘Tips for Helping Your Child Become an Exceptional Hockey Player’!

Pace the ‘Race’ – Skill Takes Time

Both children and parents alike dream of the NHL, and it is great to have a winning mindset and lofty goals, but it is also important to focus on the journey and not just the destination. Staying on task and pacing oneself will help to guard against burnout and disappointment, keeping in step with the training required to succeed, and not racing against a clock for success.

Perspective is Paramount

Whether your child is just starting out in ringette, or you have a well-skilled youth who has been in hockey training at our Langley centre for some time, it is important to continually take a step back and harness perspective as a parent. We often want to come to our child’s defense when we feel they have been wronged in some way, but lashing out against other players, parents or coaches can be harmful to your child’s development and their positive sportsmanship abilities. So perhaps take hockey training as an opportunity for you to grow as parents as well, and gain perspective on the sport without losing your cool in the process.

Know When to Take a Break

We have all heard the saying: “I didn’t raise a quitter”, but sometimes allowing your child to take a break from hockey will give them a chance to get their head and heart back into the game.

If your child is suddenly resistant to hockey training, it is likely that they simply need to take a step back from it due to burnout. A little time away can be beneficial to refreshing their team spirit, and turn their training back into an excellent part of a positive childhood experience.

At NHTC, our leaders are passionate about what they do, and that is transferred on to the children, youth and adults who we help to play the game. Whether you are looking to engage your child in the competitive sport of hockey, or are considering the starting place of ringette for your wee one, we are here to help your family enjoy the game of hockey, and gain skills that will truly assist in their lifelong success!
