Ringette – a Sport On Fire!

Ringette is a Canadian invention, invented in 1963 by Sam Jacks of North Bay, Ontario – the same man who introduced floor hockey to us a few decades previous in 1939. Since then, Ringette has grown in popularity across the nation and beyond, and is a sport NHTC is proud to offer!

So …What Is Ringette?

Ringette is a fast-paced game that is both exciting to watch, as well as to play; and as the saying goes: “if Ringette was easy, they’d call it hockey!”.

Although played similarly to hockey with an aim to score on the opposing goalie, in the sport of Ringette there are two halves of 15-20 minutes each, and a blue line instead of a red line, and all players must pass the ring before crossing this blue line.

Unlike hockey, however, players are not permitted to check other players, and there are no face-offs – but rather a “free-ring” where the ring starts at centre ice and a player must pass it to their teammate. In the event the ring lands on the crease, the goalie must throw it like a Frisbee to their teammate within 5-seconds.

Like we said, it’s a fast-moving game with many moving parts, and it is a whole lot of fun! Which is why we are thrilled to offer Spring Ringette Power Skating in a small group setting this coming April 4th – June 20th, instructed by Coach Jody Meadows. This 12-week program is intended to help young Ringette players with their skating skills, offering individual direction to a maximum group of 12, helping to increase strides, teach balance, crossovers, stops, starts and acceleration.

At NHTC, we offer Ringette to families from all over the Lower Mainland and the Fraser Valley, including: Langley, Cloverdale, Surrey, Abbotsford, and Maple Ridge. As well, we provides seasonal programs including: Learn to Skate, Learn to Play Hockey, Intro to Power Skating, Power Skating and Hockey Skills, Adult Hockey Development, Co-ed and Men’s Drop In …and more.

We pride ourselves on our top-notch coaches who are ready to help you or your child reach their highest potential, whether getting out on the ice for the first time or nearing your Gretzky goals, NHTC has a class for all levels and desires in their ice sport of choice!
